The British government are soon set to soon release a new Flood and Water management bill which is set out to create an effective way to managing flooding and coastal erosion.
It is clear that so far the government has missed out some very important things. Social housing, signposting and guidance as well as resilient repair have all been left out. This basically means that consumers are not going to be protected at all from any future flood and insurance cover is going to be at risk.
Social housing is a very important thing as the government needs to include a requirement that local authorities provide low cost insurance solutions. This is important as people who are under rent schemes currently have no way of gaining contents insurance from any flooding at all.
Awareness as well as signposting is also important as houses that are prone to flooding currently have no way finding out how to insure their property. If this is added it will be a lot easier for people to insure thier property.
It has also been put forward that the government include guidance on flooding so that advice can be given on an emergency situation as well as providing a flood kit and advice on before, during as well as after the flood hits. In some cases a flood can be worse than natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornados so it is important that the government get this right so it will actually help.
Currently there is no way you can prepare a building to prevent it from any future flooding damage, with resilient repair this can be made possible using your insurance policies to pay for anything you may need. This is very important if you are in a flooding zone.
Having home insurance and something that is going to protect your I-pod like gadget insurance can help during flooding but unless the government do something about this then even the home emergency insurance might not be able to cover you during a bad flood.
